Trike I – The Cool Cruiser
No one styles or engineers a trike better than we do at Grinnall Specialist Cars. That’s why our BMW R1200C three-wheeled motorcycle trike has been a best seller for us for nearly a decade.
The Trike-I (launched in 2000) was the first in a growing line of Grinnall trikes. Based on the BMW R1200C cruiser range, it was styled by Steve Harper who also penned the Scorpion-III and Scorpion-IV. His work blends perfectly with the styling of the R1200C and the finished product looks like a Bavarian original.
The sleek bodywork hides a carefully designed chassis, hand-crafted in 1-inch diameter, 12 gauge steel tube. The Grinnall fabrication is powder-coated and bolts onto the BMW sub-frame and engine frame to make an extremely rigid structure.
A new CNC billet top yoke resets the steering geometry, ensuring smooth and safe cornering without shoulder wrenching effort from the rider. The R1200C is fitted from new with BMWs own Tele-Lever front wishbone. This system is ideally suited to a three-wheeled layout and one of the reasons we chose this motorcycle as our first trike donor. The R1200C-Trike is the easiest trike to handle and is ideal for beginners or individuals wanting an easy to handle machine.
Other features include rear disc brakes with billet calipers and braided hoses and a sophisticated independent double wishbone rear suspension with in-board dampers and anti-roll-bar. Front braking is the standard 305mm BMW set-up.
Optional reverse: electric or mechanical.
We offer a choice of wheels: Rimstock one-piece blends nicely with the front or if your machine has 3-spoke wheels, we offer a 3-piece billet wheel that duplicates the BMW style. The same option is offered for the Montauk and CL 5-spoke versions.
A luggage rack provides a platform for a GIVI 55 litre case. An optional low luggage platform can be used for an additional bag such as a waterproof Ortlieb (up to 70 litres) or GIVI case. There is a further 26 litres of storage within the body-work in the drop down tail box.
The Trike-1 uses a stainless steel exhaust hidden inside the body, which features a slash-cut chrome tail pipe exiting the centre of the tail.
BMW ceased production of the R1200C in 2005. The Trike-I is therefore only available fully assembled onto a used low mileage donor bike sourced and supplied by us. Or, it can be factory assembled onto your own R1200 C/CL/Montauk.
99% of our UK supplied BMW trikes are factory built. The semi knocked down kit is designed for easy assembly worldwide, and for export is delivered in a wooden box, door to door. All parts included take just 25 hours to assemble. It’s a fully bolt on kit, requiring no special tools, and is easily reversible to two wheels if required. All body panels are 2-pack painted in your standard bike colour or custom painted. The chassis and fabricated parts are powder coated in silver polyester. The new CNC aluminium billet yoke and rear uprights are anodized and fully rose jointed for adjustment.
In the words of MCN: “Riding trikes is about being an individual. And that’s why we all ride … it’s a party on three wheels.”
